Larson Design Group (LDG) provided project management and full design services for safety and operational improvements at the intersection of SR 220 and SR 2027 in Towanda Township, Bradford County. The project addressed traffic flow and safety challenges associated with left‑turn movements between the two roadways, where limited acceleration distance and unclear driver expectations created conflict.
LDG designed a Florida T‑type intersection featuring a channelized acceleration lane for left turns from SR 2027 to SR 220 southbound and a dedicated right‑turn deceleration lane from SR 220 northbound to SR 2027. These improvements reduced conflict points and improved overall operations at the intersection.
Additional work included milling, overlay, and full‑depth widening of SR 220 to provide two 12‑foot travel lanes with 8‑foot shoulders. Access to T‑562 (Cummings Road) was relocated approximately 275 feet south to move it outside the merging area and better accommodate WB‑40 truck movements.
The project also included updated traffic control signage, new guide rail‑mounted and ground‑mounted delineators, raised pavement markings, and bicycle safety enhancements, as SR 220 is designated Bicycle PA Route J.
To minimize impacts during construction, LDG implemented traffic control measures and half‑width construction to maintain two lanes of traffic. Despite an accelerated schedule, LDG delivered construction plans within six weeks of notice to proceed and submitted the PS&E package seven weeks later, meeting the committed letting date and keeping the project on schedule and within budget.
