Susquehanna River Walk

Larson Design Group was responsible for the preliminary and final design, construction inspection and construction consultation of a 4.2-mile, bituminous paved pedestrian/bicycle trail along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. The trail is an extension of an existing trail to the east and begins at Commerce Park Drive in Loyalsock Township and extends westward 2.7 miles to Maynard Street in the City of Williamsport, generally following the top of the levee system. A 1.5-mile section of trail then continues on the south side of the river in the Borough of South Williamsport from Maynard Street to Market Street where this section of trail mostly follows the riverbank. The section of trail on both sides of the river between Maynard Street and Market Street creates a 3-mile Riverwalk Loop utilizing bike ramp structures off of the Market Street Bridge.

The trail features directional, safety, and informational signing, pavement markings and protective timber fencing. Interpretive signage within the Riverwalk Loop, titled “The Timber Trail,” narrates and illustrates the areas rich lumber heritage and history. Other design features include: ADA curb cut ramps, railroad crossing with actuated gate system, and a pedestrian push button signal at the Maynard Street crossing.

The project required extensive coordination with each of the municipalities/agencies, Lycoming County, PennDOT, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lycoming County Conservation District, SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
