Kramer Covered Bridge Rehabilitation

Columbia County, PA

For the Kramer Covered Bridge Rehabilitation, Larson Design Group (LDG) provided preliminary and final design services and construction inspection for the rehabilitation of a 50’ long queen post truss timber covered bridge.

The project consisted of a complete dismantling and re-erection of the existing timber superstructure and designing new reinforced concrete pile supported substructures with an aesthetically pleasing architectural surface treatment. The truss was rehabilitated to accommodate a 3-ton live load vehicle, its own dead load, wind loads and snow loads. Approximately 70% of the existing deteriorated timber members were replaced with new full sawn timber members.

LDG coordinated with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 3-0, Columbia County Commissioners and Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) to discuss the proposed rehabilitation project and receive concurrence of the proposed work from PHMC, since the existing structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
