Challenge: The ends of the historic covered bridge’s timber queen post members, timber low chord members, and timber bearing members were deteriorating, threatening the bridge’s structural integrity and existing load posting.
Solution: We performed structural design services, permitting, project bidding, and construction administration with limited inspection. The project also involved constructing new reinforced concrete bridge seats at one abutment. We removed and replaced the timber members, which required temporary jacking and support of the structure.
Outcome: The project ensures the long-term survival of a historic structure that enhances tourism, recreation, and quality of life in Columbia County. Residents near the bridge are now assured that the bridge will be serviceable, giving them access to their homes.
