Larson Design Group (LDG) provided inspection, engineering, and structural design services for the rehabilitation of the historic Rudolph and Arthur Covered Bridge (Bridge 26) on Camp Bonsall Road in Elk and New London Townships, Chester County. Constructed in 1880, the 82-foot single-span Burr Arch Truss bridge spans Big Elk Creek and serves as an important historic and community asset.
A detailed bridge inspection identified deterioration of several timber structural components, including portions of the truss system and bridge deck, as well as weathering and vandalism-related damage to the roof and siding. The bridge also exhibited moderate vertical sag along its span, limiting its load-carrying capacity and long-term performance.
To preserve the structure and improve its functionality, LDG designed repairs and rehabilitation measures that included replacement of deteriorated timber elements and installation of a concealed steel superstructure to provide additional support and reduce future sagging. The original stone masonry abutments were reconstructed using existing stone to maintain the bridge’s historic character while improving structural stability.
Additional improvements included the design of an automatic fire detection system with direct notification capabilities to local emergency responders, as well as LED lighting for the bridge and its approaches. A photometric analysis was completed to ensure lighting levels met applicable PennDOT and county requirements.
The rehabilitation project improves the bridge’s load capacity, enhances safety and reliability, and preserves its historic appearance. By extending the service life of this iconic covered bridge, the project helps protect an important piece of Chester County’s heritage while supporting tourism, recreation, and community connectivity.
