Challenge: During a routine bridge inspection, we identified scour damages to the bridge’s abutment.
Solution: The project involved constructing a concrete apron, underpinning, and rock scour protection to repair scour damages to the near abutment. In addition to the scour repairs, the stone masonry abutment was cleaned and re-pointed to preserve the integrity of the structure. A temporary access road and causeway was required to gain access to the abutment to complete the repairs.
Outcome: This project ensures the long-term survival of a 165-year-old historic covered bridge. Local residents assisted the project by providing property for the staging of construction material.
