Wilhelm Avenue and Cornwall Road Intersection Alignment

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 8-0
North Cornwall Township, Lebanon County, PA

The project vastly improved safety for the accident-prone intersection of Cornwall Road, Wilhelm Avenue, and York Street. The previous alignment of Wilhelm Avenue approaching Cornwall Road was approximately 300 feet offset from York Street, and Wilhelm Avenue serves as an access road to the southern entrance of Lebanon High School, including parking lots and sports fields. Vehicles on Wilhelm Avenue had a difficult time turning onto Cornwall Road because of its high volume of traffic, and pedestrian access was limited or nonexistent.

PennDOT and North Cornwall Township relocated a section of Wilhelm Avenue to align with York Street and create a new, signalized intersection that provides safer and more controlled access for vehicles to both cross over and turn onto Cornwall Road. It was advocated to provide full pedestrian accommodation and connectivity, as a residential area is located on the western side of Cornwall Road with existing sidewalks along York Street. The new intersection provides significantly safer pedestrian connection to an existing trail network for Lebanon High School athletic fields and school buildings.
