SR 115 Safety Improvement Project

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 5-0
Monroe County, PA

Larson Design Group (LDG) led a multidisciplinary team for the SR 115 Safety Improvement Project in Monroe County for PennDOT District 5. The project focused on a section of roadway with crash rates higher than comparable roadways across the state, addressing safety concerns related to turning movements, limited sight distance, and insufficient turn lane storage.

To improve safety and operations along the corridor, LDG designed roadway widening, full-depth reconstruction, intersection realignment, and new left-turn lanes. Sight distance at three intersections was enhanced through shoulder widening, tree removal, and the realignment of a skewed offset-T intersection. A stone retaining wall was also replaced and relocated farther from the roadway to improve visibility for motorists.

These improvements increased roadway capacity, enhanced driver visibility, provided additional recovery area, and reduced conflicts associated with turning movements. The project also included improvements to three bridges within the corridor, including widening and the installation of moment slabs and toe walls along roadway embankments adjacent to Pohopoco Creek and its floodplain.

The completed improvements provide a safer and more efficient transportation corridor, reducing crash potential while improving mobility for residents, businesses, and visitors traveling through Monroe County.
