City of Reading

The City of Reading was successful in obtaining and utilizing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for landscape architecture improvement, along with a C2P2 grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).

The City had three separate parks that they determined would receive the funds. CDBG funds were used at 3rd and Spruce and Reading Iron, while the DCNR funding was used at 11th and Pike. The parks serve a large number of residents and each has a different function and targets a different user group.

  • 3rd and Spruce Improvements focused on court resurfacing, new basketball fixtures, line striping, drainage improvements, improvements to an existing pavilion structure, and some minor site improvements.
  • Reading Iron Playground received improvements to an existing play area, including some much needed new equipment. In addition, sidewalks were replaced, benches added, and landscaping installed.
  • The 11th and Pike Playground was the largest overall park and also received the most improvements. A large number of existing play pieces were removed and four new play pieces added. Existing safety surfacing was removed and new surfacing matching other City parks installed. Finally, new site amenities such as benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles, and landscaping installed.
