Selinsgrove HS Athletic Field

To meet the school district’s growing athletic program, design and construction was completed for the new football field and track, new 3,100-seat grandstand with handicap accessibility, locker rooms, toilets, ticket booth, and visitors’ concession facility. The new buildings are located underneath the bleachers. The football field is made with an artificial turf and subsurface drainage. A new six-lane state of the art, all-weather track surface provides improved conditions for student athletes, while meeting the requirements of the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHSA). All electrical systems were upgraded to include 25-second clocks.

Custom field markings and the school district logo graphics were designed into the turf. New soccer fields, a new field hockey field and the relocation and refurbishing of a softball field were also elements of this project. Paved vehicular parking was expanded at several locations to meet the school’s growing athletic program’s increased automobile volume.

LDG performed feasibility studies and final design for the project including site layout, track event design, football and field hockey line marking plans, grading, stormwater management, bleacher design, communication system design, and architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design of the concession, restroom and locker room building.

During the design phase, LDG assembled a review committee that made decisions relative to the project. LDG schedule visits to similar facilities across the State of Pennsylvania so that the committee could see various design options. The committee chose between different surface types, line colors and logo layouts. Various options were provided to the committee throughout the design process along with opinions of probable cost. Once an overall project budget was established, various design options were considered in order to bring the project within budget. During the bidding process, several alternate bids were developed to give the committee more flexibility when awarding construction of the project, both in terms of construction options and in order to keep the project within budget. During the construction phase, LDG coordinated site visits with the contractor in order to check critical items of construction. In particular, LDG field surveyed subgrade under the turf field before the turf was laid in order to verify final grades.
