Shawnee Early Childhood Center

Shawnee Public Schools

This Early Childhood Center houses a kitchen, music room, physical education center, dining space with stage, an enclosed courtyard and 22 classrooms. Clusters of four to five classrooms are arranged around themed common areas; these themes are: Enchanted Forest, Wild West, Zoo, Creation Station, Forest Animals & Pond.

In the dining area, scalloped ceiling clouds enhance acoustics. The enclosed courtyard provides students with additional learning opportunities by giving the students access to nature. It also brings natural light to the interior corridors surrounding the courtyard. Paying homage to the history of the railroad in Shawnee, a train track pattern was integrated into the tile pattern in the corridors to serve as a walking guide to the three and four year olds at the center. For safety the gymnasium was designed to serve as a storm shelter. A ground source geothermal system was used for energy efficiency.
