Village of Watkins Glen Water System Improvements Phase I

Village of Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen, Schuyler County, NY

The Village of Watkins Glen Water System Improvements Phase I is a comprehensive project aimed at upgrading the aging water infrastructure serving Watkins Glen, New York, and surrounding areas. Led by LDG, the project includes services such as survey, topographic mapping, funding assistance, permitting, preliminary and final design, construction administration, and resident inspection.

The village’s water system, originally built in the early 1900s, serves about 2,149 residents in the village, plus 86 in Reading and 201 in Dix, while also accommodating thousands of annual tourists. In response to violations issued by the NYS Department of Health in September 2018 — triggered by a boil water order — LDG prepared and amended a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER), segmenting the overall improvements into five manageable subprojects. Phase I focuses on upgrades to the raw water intake, pump station, and water treatment plant, specifically addressing issues like zebra mussel buildup, high turbidity, disinfection by-product formation, and water age concerns. LDG coordinated with local and state agencies for permits and helped the village secure funding through NYS and federal programs, streamlining the process with a comprehensive SEQR review.
