Larson Design Group is committed to building a better world through sustainable design practices. Two new parking areas for visitors and employees at UPMC Susquehanna have incorporated techniques to help do this. The drainage system within the parking lots helps to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff. A number of islands are strategically located within these parking areas to help reduce the amount of sheet flow. The size of these islands varies and each is filled with a mixture of trees, shrubs and stone. The combination of these components helps to contribute to the sustainability of the lots. The trees planted in the central corridor help to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles and will also help to cool the surface stormwater. The combination of these many efforts and the greening effect help bring life to the man-made parking lot.
