Stewardship Stories share the experiences of our employee owners as they give back to the communities in which they live and work through financial support, volunteer commitments, and more.
PITTSBURGH, PA – Larson Design Group (LDG) recently partnered with Mansfield Borough in Tioga County, PA, to support a vital environmental project aimed at reducing stormwater surges and flood impacts in the community. LDG provided grant writing services that secured funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Growing Greener Grant .
The grant supported a wide range of environmental improvements, including the creation of wetland cells, restoration of a relic stream channel, installation of fish habitat and stream stabilization structures, and the planting of diverse habitat zones throughout a private property in the headwaters of a tributary to the Tioga River.
In addition to providing grant administration and wetland delineation, LDG employees rolled up their sleeves to assist with tree and shrub planting efforts. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service completed the on-site construction activities, while the project came to life through the strong partnership formed during planning. This collaboration included Mansfield Borough, Tioga County Conservation District, LDG, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, PA DEP, Keystone 10 Million Tree Partnership, Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, and private landowners.

The impact of the project is already significant: 5.38 acres of wetlands were created to slow storm surge and increase water retention, a quarter-mile of relic stream channel was restored, and 5.6 acres of trees and shrubs were planted to stabilize the site and provide habitat diversity.
Most recently, volunteers from LDG, Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, and Mansfield Borough came together to plant 2,475 trees and shrubs across the property —an effort that capped off the project with energy, teamwork, and commitment to conservation.
“Seeing our LDG team and community volunteers come together – planting trees, sharing stories and working side by side – was a true reminder of the impact we can make when we collaborate for the health of our communities and environment,” said Teah Murray, Environmental Specialist.
LDG staff who participated included Teah Murray, Cecelia Aten, Brad Sick, Abi Woudenberg, Cristina Donahue, Derek Johnson, Jim Neal, Tracy Gregory, Alexandra Metzker, Chris Wolfe, and Logan Hile.
