LDG Supports Economic Development with Role in $500 Million Great Lakes Cheese Facility

Larson Design Group (LDG) is pleased to announce that it is part of a $500 million project for the Great Lakes Cheese (GLC) Company in the Village of Franklinville, in which a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility will bring more than 200 jobs to the region.

Evaluation and determination

LDG provided a quick-turnaround evaluation of what improvements would be needed to the Village of Franklinville’s water and wastewater systems to accommodate the facility, including defining needs, evaluating alternatives, and compiling an estimate of total project cost and implementation schedule. LDG also worked with Cattaraugus County, where the project will be located, and the Village on how to fund the project and to conduct a quick rate study to provide a clear picture of what future water and sewer bills would be for GLC. The company needed this information compiled quickly and accurately in order to determine that this site was the right option for them.

The firm now has a contract with the Village to provide all planning, permitting, survey, design, and construction administration and inspection to implement $5.5M of needed water and wastewater improvements to execute the project, which broke ground in early May. Some of the improvements include a new water supply well, a new water storage tank, upsizing and expansion of water distribution systems, and a wastewater collection system expansion to the new site.

“This economic development is a huge win that will transform the Village of Franklinville, and it’s exciting for LDG to be part of that success,” said LDG’s Brad Sick, PE.

The 500,000 square foot manufacturing and packaging facility, expected to be finished in 2024, will double its milk consumption to nearly 1.5 billion pounds and make use of about 14.4 percent of New York’s total milk production. GLC is the largest natural cheese packager in the country with facilities in six states, including New York.
