Stites Tunnel Continues to Garner Accolades with 2021 ABCD Award

Larson Design Group (LDG) is proud to announce that its Bridge Design Team has received the 2021 award for Outstanding Short Span from the Association for Bridge Design and Construction (ABCD) Susquehanna Chapter for its Stites Tunnel Bridge Replacement project.

LDG helped lead the unique, complex project in Monroe County, which involved replacing a steel through-girder bridge that passed through one barrel of an existing concrete railroad tunnel. LDG developed an alternate design using precast concrete bridge segments and post-tensioning to provide further innovation for the approach structures and facilitate the timing and scheduling of multiple site activities.

The firm worked closely with the H&K Group as their engineer to brainstorm the alternate design and complete the final design and plansand also provided construction phase engineering, including designing the temporary support structures and on-site verification of post-tensioning and grouting operations.

It was yet another accolade for the Stites Tunnel Bridge Replacement project, which also garnered an LDG President Award for Project of the Year and an Honorable Mention from the nationwide Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards.

“This project was challenging, but it helped us look at how we can use precast concrete more efficiently and effectively to meet some challenging site conditions,” said Quentin Rissler, Program Manager in LDG’s Lititz office. “We were pleased to partner with H&K Group and PennDOT Engineering District 5-0 to develop these innovative applications of precast concrete, segmental design and post-tensioning.”

“One of our core values at LDG is innovation, and we are always looking to provide new approaches with a focus on quality, speed and continuous improvement,” added Dave Gunsallus, Director of Bridge Design. “The Stites Tunnel Project is a showcase for innovation from our Bridge Design team.”
