LDG Bridge Team Recognized by National Design Award Program

Larson Design Group (LDG) is proud to announce that its Bridge Design Team has received an Honorable Mention from the 2021 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards, a nationwide awards program that recognizes design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete, for its Stites Tunnel and Bridge Alternate Design project.

The PCI program “has helped the design and construction community innovate and advance by showcasing ideas that push the envelope, overcome challenges, and improve upon existing concepts,” according to the organization. The entrants represent some of the most innovative designs in buildings and transportation from across the country; some of 2021’s winners include the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, the Collonade and Infield Gate at Churchill Downs in Kentucky, and the Nordstrom Flagship Store in New York City.

LDG’s role in the unique, complex Stites Tunnel project – which involved replacing a steel through-girder bridge that passed through one barrel of an existing concrete railroad tunnel – was to develop an alternate design using precast concrete bridge segments and post-tensioning to provide further innovation for the approach structures and facilitate the timing and scheduling of multiple site activities. LDG worked closely with the H&K Group as their engineer to brainstorm the alternate design and complete the final design and plans. LDG also provided construction phase engineering, including designing the temporary support structures and on-site verification of post-tensioning and grouting operations.

We are honored that PCI recognized the significant accomplishments by the entire team, which included LDG, PennDOT District 5-0 as the owner, the H&K Group as the contractor, Northeast Prestressed Products as the fabricator and HNTB as the design reviewer,” said LDG’s Quentin Rissler, who served as Project Manager. “This truly was a group effort, and we’re grateful for the support from LDG to pursue this unique opportunity.

This is the second time in recent weeks that the Stites Tunnel has been recognized for its innovative approach and design – the project also was chosen as Project of the Year by LDG’s inaugural President Awards.
