PITTSBURGH, PA – Larson Design Group (LDG), an award-winning, employee-owned national architecture, engineering, and consulting firm, is pleased to announce that it has been chosen by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation (BAMR) to lead a significant mine reclamation project in Lackawanna County, restoring and improving more than 100 acres of land and 4 miles of stream across two boroughs.
The Eddy Creek Restoration project is a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing environmental and public health hazards associated with abandoned mine lands in Olyphant and Throop Boroughs. Having been abandoned for decades, these sites contain various abandoned mine land features (AMLFs) such as dangerous highwalls, clogged streams, pits, and embankments that pose a threat to residents and communities and create water quality issues if not addressed.

LDG will lead a team including Cedarville Engineering Group (CEG) and RESPEC for the meticulous planning, design, and permitting to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for this crucial project, the goal of which is to eliminate public health and safety hazards, enhance environmental health, and promote sustainable land use in the region.
The reclamation includes approximately 103.3 acres of land previously disturbed by mining activities and the restoration of over four miles of stream channel known as Eddy Creek. It will involve removing equipment and facilities, backfilling and grading hazardous areas, restoring the channel of Eddy Creek, and rehabilitating existing masonry arch culverts. A new stream crossing on Underwood Road will be constructed, and remnants of the historic dam will be removed to improve water quality and ecological habitats.
“LDG continues to provide quality work to the Bureau and this selection shows their confidence in us,” said Ken Stockert, LDG Director of Geo-Environmental. “This project will challenge our entire team, and we look forward to executing to make improvements to these communities.”
