Creekview Road Interchange Captures ASHE Project of the Year Honor for Larson Design Group

Although circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic have canceled or postponed gatherings, some organizations have turned to technology in order to hold virtual events – including award ceremonies. The Harrisburg section of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) held its spring meeting via Zoom on June 9, where Larson Design Group (LDG) was presented with a 2019 Project of the Year Award for its work on the Creekview Road Interchange in Cumberland County. LDG served as the project design firm and provided preliminary engineering, final design and construction phase services.

Located in Hampden Township, Cumberland County, the project addressed several safety concerns of the interchange between Creekview Road and SR 581. Originally, the flow of traffic exiting SR581 onto Creekview Road was controlled by stop signs at the end of the north‐ and south‐bound off ramps, which caused extreme delays and created safety issues during peak traffic hours as traffic exiting SR 581 for Creekview Road would back up on to SR 581.

The project included upgrades such as adding traffic signals to the interchange; expanding the on and off ramps to accommodate existing and future traffic volume; full‐depth bituminous and concrete reconstruction; and the mill and overlay of the project area. Additionally, guiderail and signage were upgraded to meet the current standards and an eastbound left turn lane at Summit Way was added late in the design process at the request of Hampden Township to improve safety for residents.

“We’re honored to accept a Project of the Year Award for the Creekview Road project, which supports the overall mobility and economic vitality of the region by improving safety and usability of the interchange,” said Stevan Wilver, Vice President of Transportation. “I’m proud of our team for their detailed coordination and successful execution in every step of the work.”
