LDG Receives ACEC/PA Diamond Awards for CNG, Bridge Slide Projects

Larson Design Group recently took home two prestigious Diamond Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania. Given annually to projects across the Commonwealth, the awards recognize engineering excellence in a variety of categories.

LDG’s innovative 2017-18 Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge slide project was awarded in the Studies, Research and Consulting Engineering Services category. The project involved the demolition and reconstruction of a 60-year-old structurally deficient bridge within a 55-hour timeframe using innovative sliding bridge technology designed by LDG. The accelerated bridge construction “roller” technique was a first for the Turnpike and one of the few bridge slides to have been achieved in the commonwealth over the past three-plus decades. LDG teamed with Road-Con to replace the bridge on the northeast extension of I-476 in Lehigh County over the course of a single weekend, which successfully minimized disruption to tens of thousands of motorists and avoided stiff financial penalties.

In the Energy category, LDG was honored for the PennDOT Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Public-Private Partnership (P3). LDG teamed with Trillium CNG to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a program of CNG fueling stations in Pennsylvania. LDG provided multi-discipline engineering and construction phase services for all fueling stations and garages and coordinated permitting with a complex network of more than 20 agencies and authorities throughout the state. LDG and Trillium CNG created prototypes to expedite the design and review process and developed innovative permitting tracking software as a critical tool. The stations supply locally sourced CNG to more than 1,600 public transit buses at 29 agencies across the Commonwealth to save fuel and operational costs at a net zero development cost to taxpayers.

LDG, along with representatives from PennDOT and Trillium CNG, received the awards at the ACEC/PA Diamond Awards Gala on Feb. 28 in Lancaster.
