Stewardship Stories: A Look Back at How LDG Gave Back in 2023

Stewardship Stories share the experiences of our employee owners as they give back to the communities in which they live and work through financial support, volunteer commitments, and more.

At LDG, our culture encourages our people to invest in themselves and their communities. Every year, we offer our employees eight hours of paid stewardship time to use toward volunteer opportunities, and every year, our people take advantage – from building homes for Habitat for Humanity to mentoring young minds in STEM-centered programs and competitions.

In 2023, LDG employees representing 13 offices used more than 445 hours of stewardship time to help 32 non-profit organizations and groups. Here are a few highlights from LDG’s year in giving back.

Helping shape young minds

LDG Federal Operations Manager & Senior Vice President Bruce Preston is an active member of the Society of Military Engineers (SAME) Phoenix Post – and an advocate for engaging young people in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Earlier this year, he brought the two together, with LDG sponsoring a half-day STEM camp at iFly indoor skydiving and Bruce – who is based in our Phoenix, AZ office – volunteering at the event. Driving community – and equity – forward

This summer, several LDG employees based in our Pittsburgh, PA office – Dave Baum, Sr. Project Manager, and Rachel King, Sr. Engineering Associate, both with our Transportation group; and Damon Rhodes, Director of Business Development – played a significant role in the recent 2nd annual golf outing held by the Pittsburgh chapter of WTS International, a worldwide organization dedicated to creating a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable transportation industry through the support and advancement of women.

The golf outing is geared toward first-time and less experienced women golfers, teaching the basics of the game, and offering practice time – a unique approach to events that are typically dominated by veteran or highly competitive golfers. In addition to serving as a stewardship opportunity for LDG employees, the outing also reflects the firm’s efforts on addressing issues of diversity, equity, belonging & inclusion (DEIB) in the workplace and beyond. Sharing food and raising funds

“Wiener Wednesday” certainly is catchy, which is why Cindy Straub, Program Coordinator, wanted to use it for the name of weekly lunch fundraiser for Family Promise of Lycoming County (FPLC) – a leading non-profit organization in the Williamsport, PA area that aims to help children and their families who are facing homelessness.

In July, Cindy – who is based in our Williamsport office – began the event simply, letting others know that she would be offering hot dogs during lunch on Wednesdays and asking for donations for FPLC in return. As interest built, others began offering to buy the hot dogs or buns and bringing in snacks and desserts to add to the weekly fare, which grew to include a rotating menu of soups, stews, chilis, and even the beloved “walking taco.”

The event became a much-anticipated event in the Williamsport office, and participants donated generously to help the FPLC. Wiener Wednesday raised a whopping $1,600 from participants, and LDG gave an additional $2,164 through matching funds and corporate donations – leading to an impressive total of $3,764.

Cindy said she would like to continue Weiner Wednesday in 2024, not only to benefit a crucial resource for ending homelessness, but also for the sense of camaraderie and community in the office.

“It was so wonderful to bring together co-workers each week that may not often interact and give people a chance to sit and chat and get to know each other,” Cindy said.
