At Larson Design Group, we believe that our employees are our greatest asset. This spotlight is on Brenton Miller, Senior Financial Analyst.

What is your position here at Larson Design Group and when did you join LDG?

Senior Financial Analyst, October 2019

Describe a typical day in your role:

It’s hard to explain a typical day because my tasks change as we progress through a month. On a weekly basis I review timesheets and expense reports for the buildings group and make sure they are posted timely and in accordance with LDG policies. Towards the end of the month I will start reviewing project financials and planning for our monthly PM meetings. In those meeting, I review the financial health of each project to make sure we are meeting department and LDG level financial metrics. When our meetings are finished, I usually have a list of actions items that I need to complete before our accounting month close. Examples of those tasks are following up with clients on aged AR, preparing invoices for jobs with high WIP, adjusting Vision setup/budgets so we properly recognize revenue, or further researching unusual financial results. After the month closes, I will prepare various reports/analytics for my department that will help the VP, Director, and PM’s make business decisions. In between my monthly/weekly responsibilities I get various requests from PM’s to assist with project setup, billing, collections, vendor payment, reporting, T&E transfers, etc.

What attracted you to join Larson Design Group originally?

I knew of LDG’s exceptional growth and awesome culture while working at a CPA firm that had LDG as a client. I never thought that I would have an opportunity to join LDG since our HQ is 2.5 hours from my home. However, when I saw that LDG opened a Harrisburg office and had an opening in the finance depart, I was all over it. LDG was also attractive due to our 100% ESOP status. During my career in public accounting, I noticed that the culture was significantly better at ESOP companies and better positioned in the marketplace for future growth.

How has Larson Design Group helped you in your career development?

In the past, I was normally the person who sat in meetings and didn’t speak. However, the culture and open-door management structure at LDG makes it easier for me to share ideas and develop my leadership skills.

What is your proudest moment at Larson Design Group?

Ask me in a few months…. I am currently working with a few others from LDG to improve our project accounting processes that include project set-up, revenue recognition and billing. I am hoping the results of this initiative will decrease the administrative burden on PM’s and increase our efficiency/accuracy in the accounting department.

If you could switch places with anyone else at Larson Design Group for a day, who would it be and why?

I would enjoy Keith Kuzio’s coaching/mentor role for a day. It would be rewarding to assist others in recognizing their strengths and help them achieve their career goals

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I have an interest in software design and currently have an app on the Android store that gets a few downloads per week. Like a typical accountant…  I created a spreadsheet to help my wife track her sales, commissions, and tips in her career as a dog groomer. After discovering that other dog groomers had similar frustration, I turned my spreadsheet into an app.

What advice do you have for a prospective candidate considering Larson Design Group?

My advice to them would be to identify their strengths and find a career where you can utilize those strengths every day. People tend to focus on trying to increase their weaknesses, but I strongly believe you will grow faster by focusing and fine-tuning your strengths.
