Larson Design Group (LDG) is proud to announce that Bob Cawthern, Senior Environmental Specialist, has achieved a Senior Professional Wetland Scientist designation from the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS).
The SWS is a leading international non-profit organization devoted to “promoting understanding, conservation, protection, restoration, science-based management, and sustainability of wetlands,” according to its website. The designation is a significant accomplishment, so we sat down with Bob for a discussion of some specifics on how he attained it and what it means for his role with LDG.
What are the requirements for earning this designation?
The designation is given to Professional Wetland Scientists (PWS) that have maintained their status for 20 years or more and have upheld the standards set forth through the Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification Program. The certification program is designed to ensure a person’s continued involvement in the field of wetland science either academically or professionally and that they maintain a minimum level of expertise through continuing education.
What new opportunities or experiences will this open for you?
I believe that while this is a satisfying personal accomplishment, the opportunities that it offers will also be very beneficial for the company moving forward. It could help demonstrate to current or potential clients that LDG has a level of experience in the field of natural resources that other companies may lack.
What advice would you give to others considering earning this designation?
I would urge anyone interested in a career of wetland science to pursue and maintain PWS certification throughout their career, either for the benefit of their employer or for seeking new employment opportunities. The majority of consulting firms across the country that have an environmental division are now making some form of wetland delineation certification a condition in the job description.
