In 2017, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission recognized that it couldn’t use traditional methods to repair a 60-year-old, three-span deteriorated steel bridge located just north of the Allentown interchange. The project, designed by HDR, was put out for construction bids with a requirement that Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods be used to complete the dual bridge replacements with a single weekend closure. The contractor was faced with a potential a penalty of $55,000 per hour (or every part there-of) for exceeding the strict time limit.
This project was one of the first two ABC bridges attempted by the Turnpike using lateral slide techniques. Using the ABC technique reduced the project duration from an estimated 18 months to just 55 hours, a time savings that benefitted the bridge’s 30,000 daily users.
