Schuylkill County, PA

State Route 61 Widening & Rehabilitation

This 2.3-mile long project consisted of reconstruction of the existing four-lane highway between the Boroughs of Schuylkill Haven and Pottsville. Work consisted of slightly modifying the roadway alignment and the addition of two jug-handle type intersections with traffic signals to better maintain access and provide U-turns for access to local businesses. The existing bituminous overlay was replaced with a new bituminous Superpave wearing surface with pavement build-up provided to correct inadequate super-elevation on curves. A concrete median barrier with anti-glare screen was installed the entire length of the project with widening to maintain proper sight distance. Drainage of the project area was significantly improved by installation of new cross pipes and storm sewers.

Larson Design Group was responsible for complete development of the roadway plans and performed construction services throughout the entire construction phase of the project. Close communication was ongoing with the local Water and Sewer Authority to coordinate the necessary relocation of their 24″ waterline facility.

This project has enhanced the overall safety and ability of the traveling public to move through an area that previously was congested and had a high accident rate.
