Description

The project involved the replacement of a single lane, deteriorated and load posted steel through truss bridge. Traffic was maintained on the existing structure during construction of the proposed bridge. Construction vehicles could not use the load posted bridge, which is the only access to a mission institute on the east side of the creek. LDG detailed a temporary causeway for contractor access to the project. The near abutment is located very close to State Route 287, which necessitated temporary shoring to minimize excavation limits and support the adjacent roadway. LDG detailed the bridge so that it could accommodate the turning movements of large trucks and buses without those vehicles encroaching on the opposite lane of traffic on S.R. 287 while attempting to turn onto the bridge. This resulted in a bridge width that is wider than the minimum permissible for this type of roadway.

LDG performed complete design services, including structural and highway engineering, field survey, and construction consultation and inspection. The completed project provides a safer structure and enhances the transportation facilities of Lycoming County. The new structure permits large vehicles, including fire trucks, school buses, garbage trucks, and oil trucks, among others, to access the mission institute on the east side of Larrys Creek. Previously, these vehicles could not access the facility.
