Structural Engineering Helps Transition Outdoor Advertising to the Digital Age
“Lamar’s digital billboards are an innovation that our clients need. Getting designs and approvals quickly means growth for our clients and Lamar Advertising. We make this happen by working with Larson Design Group,” said Mike Beiter, Vice President and General Manager, from Lamar Advertising in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. “They understand what we need and how we do business. Lamar and Larson Design Group are both committed to quality and growth.”
Lamar Advertising, a national outdoor advertising and signage company, is upgrading their outdoor billboard displays to new digital displays, many of which are being placed on existing structures. Many of the structures have no drawings available. To upgrade these displays to the modern era, Larson Design Group’s structural engineers performed site visits to various sign structures throughout the northeast portion of the US and documented their structural member locations and physical sizes.
Through a subcontractor, geophysical surveys were also performed to determine the size and depth of each foundation system, using ground penetrating radar and electric resistivity testing methods. After the field documentation was completed, our engineers analyzed the existing structure to determine if it was capable of supporting the new, heavier digital displays. In many cases, the structures were deficient, requiring modification to be capable of supporting the additional structural loads while complying with new codes. Modifications designed by our team consisted of reinforcing the structure by means of additional structural members, or by enhancing the foundation.
