JV Brown Library Children’s Wing

James V. Brown Library Children’s Wing Addition, Williamsport, PA

New Space Providing Learning Programs, Materials, and an Inviting Atmosphere for Families, and Especially Children.

Libraries educate and inspire, especially children. The James V. Brown library, to meet the needs of the growing community and families in the area, needed a new space tailored to providing learning programs, materials, and inviting atmosphere especially for families.

A downtown lot adjacent to the library is being developed where existing buildings on the site have been demolished. The new wing will incorporate all of the library’s children’s services.

The design incorporates the Library’s desire to address the unique reading and learning needs of children, with flexible spaces that can be easily modified for various programs and a component known as a family space. The parent section and the infant and toddler sections are all in the same grouping so parents can enjoy the Library experience with their children. The concept of shared space continues throughout the wing. There will be a new teen space going in on the second floor.

The $4 million project encompasses 36,000 square feet in a three-story stately brick building with highlighting concrete features and abundant natural light.

We worked closely with the library staff to develop an interior space that would be flexible and easily adapted to future changes in library services. Special attention was given to creating intimate learning spaces that would be used by various age levels.
