Description

The publication, authored by Larson Design Group, contains about 130 pages of information on how to plan, design, construct and maintain trails for ATVs, snowmobiles, and off-highway motorcycles. In the Spring of 2002, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources initiated the project to develop standards for the planning, design and construction of trails for motorized off-highway recreational vehicles. The Snowmobile and ATV Advisory Committee (SAAC) approved publication of the manual at its March 2004 meeting. Primary distribution of the manual is electronic through DCNR’s website and on CD. A limited hard copy distribution will also be made.

This manual has been published through the efforts of the Bureau of Facility Design and Construction and the Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, with guidance, input and review by the SAAC. The LDG team researched existing standards for recreation trails throughout the United States, compiled a list of applicable resources and publications, and gathered input from members of off-highway recreational vehicle clubs and trail owners. This was a significant step in DCNR’s current efforts to improve and increase recreational opportunities for motorized recreational vehicles. The information will be helpful to government agencies, trail enthusiasts, private enterprises, organizations and clubs to guide their efforts in building and maintaining trails on public and private lands. Chapters included in the manual are: Planning, Concept Design, Trail Design, Trail Signing, Trail Construction, and Trail Maintenance.

The Pennsylvania Trail Design Manual for Off Highway Recreational Vehicles is available for download off of PA DCNR’s website at www.dcnr.state.pa.us/brc/publications.
