Bowman Field

Williamsport, PA

Reviving a Historic Baseball Field for Future Generations

Historic Bowman Field, home of the Williamsport Crosscutters AA baseball team (affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies), was constructed in 1926. The beloved field was showing signs of its age in the form of deterioration of the supporting columns near the base of the stands.

To minimize future safety issues, while reviving the structure so it could continue to house more home games, Larson Design Group was contracted to assess the structural condition of the columns and design repair methods to remedy their distress.

We performed a thorough assessment of the existing conditions of the columns, which involved visual as well as non-destructive testing. Exploratory demolition was also conducted to assess a representative portion of columns hidden by finishes in the office and locker room areas of the stadium, helping to minimize unsightly investigation from the public. Several different methods of repair were developed for the different levels of distress occurring in the column bases. The repair methods ranged from cleaning and repainting to complete replacement of the base of a column. Our team prepared the construction and contract documents, bid documents, and provided inspection of the repair work.

The resulting work not only allows continued play at this community treasure, but enhances the aesthetic environment while watching one of America’s great national pastimes.
