Shad Run Williamsport, PA
City of Williamsport Portal
Integrating Art into a Functional Environment
In conjunction with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), River Valley Transit, and the City of Williamsport, the focus of this project was to incorporate the sculpture Shad Run by Seattle, Washington-based artist Joseph McDonnell into the Williamsport Streetscape and Central Business District. The sculpture is the focal point of a new plaza that greets both motorists and pedestrians as they arrive into the City from the Market Street Bridge. Additionally, the plaza includes a series of stone seat walls, two rows of honey locust trees, and new brick pavers. Interpretive pieces within the plaza help inform visitors on the history of the American Shad in the Susquehanna Valley and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s efforts to bring the Shad back to the Susquehanna River.
