The overlook at one time was adjacent to Route 6 and was a popular destination for motorists in the 1930’s, 40′s and 50′s. Unfortunately, with the enlargement and realignment of Route 6, the overlook drew less and less attention and had been in disrepair for years. Larson Design Group (LDG) aided in the design of a modified site layout that included new materials, but preserved the character of the overlook by keeping the original site lines. LDG developed plans and specifications for the restoration of the masonry and the site modifications. One of the masonry turrets was completely rebuilt including new foundation; new foundations were built for the masonry monument wall and the wall was completely rebuilt. The remaining of the masonry was reset and re-pointed. The bluestone sidewalk and curbing was also rebuilt and constructed to meet accessibility requirements. Other portions of work included demolition of an existing building, removal of tree growth which was blocking views, new storm drainage, and re-pavement of the parking area. The restoration work was done to U.S. Department of the Interior standards.
Construction was completed in the fall of 2009.
