Jeremy Hummel, designer in our Selinsgrove site engineering department, graduated from Leadership Susquehanna Valley (LSV) on June 15th. LSV provides leadership programs to educate and motivate a diverse group of citizens for effective community and organizational leadership. The organization is driven by an all-volunteer board of directors, and currently contracts with the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce for professional management services.
The program includes a one-and-a-half day retreat in September, followed by eight full-day programs from October to May. Here’s what Jeremy had to say about LSV.
What’s the most valuable leadership lesson you received from Leadership Susquehanna Valley?
It’s easy to say you’re a leader, or assume the role of a leader, but it takes much more than a title to be a great leader. You have to lead by example, rally the troops, and have them buy into you and your approach on things. If you’re not passionate about your job and your actions, why would anyone follow you?
What’s something you learned about your community that you didn’t know before LSV?
LSV gives you the opportunity to experience many different parts of the community that you take for granted each and every day. For instance, I was born and raised in this area, and I was able to tour several companies that have a huge impact on the local economy and workforce. It helps you appreciate what they bring to the table for others in the community.
Would you recommend the program to others? If so, why?
Yes, LSV has given me opportunities to meet people outside of my profession and expand my network. It has also given me a wonderful opportunity to learn and identify my leadership skill set. And without being put outside of my comfort zone (and cubicle), I never would have experienced these things.
